Description Sicily. Syracuse. Gold 100 litrae (5.80 gm, 6:00). Sicily, Syracuse, Ca. 405-400 BC. [Σ]ΥΡ[ΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ], head of Arethusa left, wearing triple pendant earring and pearl necklace, hair confined by ampyx and sphendone ornamented with stars, wavy locks swept back over ampyx and above ear, eight-rayed star behind neck / Young Heracles kneeling right on rocky ground, resting on right knee, left leg thrown forward, wrestling Nemean lion. Berend 42 (D24/R21). SNG ANS 338 (same dies). Some minor contact marks on Arethusa's cheek. Die break on face of Hercules. The reverse in almost cameo-like high relief. Good extremely fine/mint state. ANS inventory no. 1997.9.80. From the Estate of John D. Leggett, Jr., 1997. Ex Naville XII, 18-23 October 1926, lot 931.
